TMD CREW WIN WORLDS BIGGEST GRAFFITI COMP NZ

Deirdre Dawson Disrupt, Barbara Holloway K Road Precinct Manager left hold one of the panels sold with Nora West K Road Arts manager

People of all ages came from across Auckland in their thousands to witness the spectacle of eight Graffiti Art crews battling it out for the top place in the Wrte4Gold competition.  Grandmas brought their grandchildren and aunties their nieces and nephews.  The crowds who poured in over eight hours of painting were entertained by some of New Zealand’s top Dj’s including Penfold, Manuel Bundy, Ayesha, Nick D, Dubhead as part of New Zealand Music Month.

Eleven walls went up; one for the judges, one for ‘throwups’, a ‘have a go wall’ and eight for competitors.  The theme phrase chosen by the judges for the competition was ‘Zero Tolerance’ to emphasise that illegal graffiti will not be tolerated.  The K Road crew TMD, based at Disrupt Gallery, were judged the winner and will be flown to Germany to compete in the world finals in August. One of the international judges, Akut, stayed on in Auckland and painted a control box on the corner of Symonds St and K Road.

Each wall was 15 metres long and divided into 12 panels.  Each panel was for sale at $100 as part of fundraising to send the winning crew of five to Germany.  Over 50 panels have sold and on the day a family from Remuera bought an entire wall to go inside their Arney Road home! Judith Tizard MP and Minister for Auckland was a welcome guest at the event and generously purchased her own piece of graffiti art.

Panels are still available and can be viewed at www.disruptiv.com

Some of the boutique stores and cafes in K Road experienced record sales and great comments have flowed in.  “What a brilliant day on K’ Rd last Saturday with write4gold. My nephew and nieces were mesmerised watching the graffiti artists at work – and although young, they got the message that most were clearly spraying up: that most back-street graffiti-ing will get you in trouble with the law. The breakdancing was a big hit and added to the exuberance and excellent energy all along the street,” said Debbie Harkness, Manager Parnell Mainstreet.

All in all a very happy day.  There was some tagging by very young people from suburbia as a direct result of the event but K Road Business Association and Disrupt contacted business owners and painted it out as soon as possible.
