The unveiling of George Nuku's "Out of Space Marae" on April 18 attracted over 100 guests and approximately 400 visitors over the ensuing two days. The unveiling was accompanied by an eery and mystical dance performance by John Ioane. John, also a featured artist at Cambridge, is to give the performance at the opening in the UK. This was Aucklander's only chance to view the project prior to participatioon in the PASIFIKA STYLES 2006 Exhibition in Cambridge, United Kingdom |
| George describes the marae as "a carved wharenui from clear perspex, engaging in a conversation with the light and allowing light to reach all corners of the house; to suggest that perspex is as real as anything else, ie., totara, and to exercise this whakaaro as freely and naturally as breathing. Furthermore to put the mass production of Maori carving out of pounamu etc into a form of perspective implying that these ancient forms and materials are supposed to be rare and precious.” |
